    Corrine Louis
Corrine Louis is an award winning Acoma potter born 1959. Corrine revives the designs of her mother Carrie Chino-Charlie and her grandmother, Marie Z. Chino, a matriarch of Acoma pottery. Corrine’s pottery is hand coiled and traditionally fired outdoors. She hand paints her pottery in the traditional way with natural, native pigments.

Corrine is credited with the innovation of horsehair pottery. The story goes that she accidentally had one of her hairs fall on a piece of pottery while firing and she noted the unique color and pattern left by the hair. She experimented with different types of hair and discovered horsehair, when combined with ashes, left the most beautiful patterns. After years of trial and error, she had created a new form of Southwestern pottery and this style has been imitated by hundreds of artists since.

Corrine’s husband, Gary “Yellow Corn” Louis, is also a highly noted Acoma potter. Gary makes hand carved pots from green ware and uses this horsehair and ashes technique to make his own beautiful pottery designs.
