    Victor Coochwytewa

Victor Coochwytewa is one of the most beloved Hopi overlay artists of the 20th century. Born in 1922, Victor was a World War II veteran, serving in the South Pacific. Victor earned multiple metals for his service including a Purple Heart.

Victor returned home to the Hopi mesas after being honorably discharged in 1946 and began his career in jewelry. He learned his craft from two very respected Hopi artists, Fred Kabotie and Paul Saufkie. Victor’s career spanned more than 60 years before he passed away in 2011.

Victor’s jewelry is defined by intricate and clean overlay designs in both sterling silver and gold. In many ways, his designs and techniques set the standards that Hopi jewelers hope to live up to today. He was an American war hero, Purple Heart recipient, Arizona Living Treasure, and has piece of art in collection all across the United States and the entire world. We truly feel that no collection of Hopi jewelry is complete without a piece by Victor Coochwytewa.
