The Kingman Turquoise mine is located near Kingman, Arizona within the Cerbat Mountains. Like many other turquoise mines, it began as a copper mining operation when the area was rediscovered by James Haas in the late 1800s. Kingman turquoise gained popularity in the 1950s-1970s, and its vibrant blue became the quintessential look of American turquoise. Kingman can come in a variety of blue-green shades, but high grade Kingman turquoise is known for its deep blue hue with tight, dark spiderweb matrix and touches of pyrite. The Kingman mine is still open and operating, continuing to produce a large amount of beautiful turquoise. In fact, some claim that the Kingman mine produces more turquoise by weight than all the other mines in the Southwest combined. The Kingman region is home to a few other notable turquoise mines, including Turquoise Mountain and Ithaca Peak.
