    Ruth Yazzie
Ruth Yazzie is one of nine children - seven brothers and one sister - from the Gallup region in New Mexico. Her mother Maggie Lincoln is an accomplished Navajo rug weaver.

As a young girl she would have dreams about making jewelry, even though no one in her family made jewelry. When she was 10 years old, her parents sent her to live with a family in Utah. They wanted her to have more opportunity and an education. She would come home only in the summer. The first year was very difficult, but she acclimated to her new family and speaks fondly of them today. Ruth believes this family helped her in many ways.

When Ruth was in her early 20s, she stopped by a shop in Gallup that made jewelry.  She asked how she could learn to make jewelry, and the owner said, “I will give you some silver and small stones, and let’s see what you can do.” She soon learned a variety of jewelry techniques. He would buy every piece of jewelry she made, and she worked for him for many years before going out on her own. Ruth makes beautiful jewelry pieces that feature turquoise and coral cluster work, overlay, and stamping.

Ruth has four children and a couple grandchildren now, and they all live in Phoenix, Arizona. Her children went to college, and one daughter is a radiologist technician. None of her children are carrying on her jewelry work.

In her spare time, Ruth loves to play games with her grandchildren. Ruth is a very kind and warm hearted woman.
