    Neil David Sr

    Neil David Sr. was born June 4th 1944 in the First Mesa village of Polacca in Hopi.  Neil learned kachina carving from his grandfather Victor Charlie and had made his first doll before the age of ten. In fifth grade, Neil’s art teacher was Fred Kabotie.

    In 1965, Neil was drafted into the US Army and served until 1968. When he returned home he began carving full-time and began to gain recognition. In 1971, he was featured on the June issue of Arizona Highways.

    Neil continued to pursue his passion and has become one of the most recognized Hopi artist of his time. Although he is an accomplished painter Neil is most famous for his humorous portrayal of Tewa clowns. 

    Neil was awarded the Arizona Indian Living Treasures award in 2005. He  currently resides with his wife Dealva in Polacca on First Mesa.
