    Martha and Gene Jackson
Martha and Gene Jackson were Navajo silversmiths from Chinle, Arizona. A husband and wife team, they created impeccable handcrafted sterling silver jewelry for several decades. They were featured in many Native American jewelry books and won numerous awards.

Gene learned his skills at an early age from carefully observing his father, who was a silversmith working in old traditional styles. Gene later refined his abilities by attending a class at the Navajo Community College. Here, he was taught by the famous Navajo silversmith, Kenneth Begay. Some of Kenneth Begay's influence can be seen in Gene's pieces. Martha learned silversmithing from Gene in the 1960s, which began a long career of collaborating with her husband in jewelry. Both Gene and Martha preferred to work with traditional designs and materials. They stamped their work with a hogan symbol and their last name "JACKSON”. Talent seems to run in the Jackson family. Gene’s brother, Dan Jackson (d. 2022), was a master jeweler as well, and their son, Tommy Jackson, is a well-known silversmith in his own right.

Martha passed away in 2019, and Gene passed away in 2021. They were warmhearted people and talented artists who are missed!
