    Jennifer Jesse Smith

“All of my work has a creation story. A connection that bonds the work with the wearer. I feel I’ve done my best when the client has a connection with the soul of the work and unites it with their spirit and adventure. The work must have meaning, myth and beauty or it has no real power.” New Mexico jeweler, Jennifer Jesse Smith’s “Jewelry for the Soulful” is an expression of spirit, art and passion. It is fashioned to be felt, not just worn.

“As a child growing up in the Black Hills of South Dakota, I was fortunate to be surrounded by Lakota culture and spirituality. My mother and Lakota grandmother made me a sacred Lakota beaded medicine bag, instructing me to wear it every day for protection... my little medicine bag was a source of endless wonder, mystery and spiritual power. It validated my imaginative way of seeing the world and ignited my passion for creating art.”

At age 7, while backpacking through Europe with her mother in search of rare Venetian trade beads, Jennifer was taken by the sight of her first punk rockers and their sense of personal expression. Later that afternoon at the Louvre, she stood in front of a painting by Michelangelo and announced she would become an artist.

She continued to push her talent to new heights, earning a BFA in sculpture from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Her adventures led her to the motion picture business where she designed medicine warrior talismans for more than 200 warriors.

Blending these two sensibilities - the classical with the postmodern - has been Jennifer’s métier ever since. Her passion, attention to detail, and the originality of her adornments have attracted a wide following. Actors including Colin Farrell, Johnny Depp, Billy Bob Thornton, and comedian Margaret Cho all own original designs by Jennifer Jesse Smith.

Inspired by indigenous metalsmithing techniques from around the world, Jennifer combines her love of sculpture, silversmithing, and the elegance and edginess of rock-and-roll fashion to create original, balanced, wearable art that invokes a sacred connection and collaboration with the wearer.
