    Ed Kabotie

My name is Ed Kabotie.  I am from the Tewa village of Santa Clara in Northern New Mexico, and the Hopi village of Shungopavi in Northern Arizona.  On the day I was born, snow clouds hung over the mountains surrounding the village of Santa Clara, so my grandfather’s sister named me “Okhuwa P’ing” or Cloud Mountain.

My personal goal as an artist is to creatively express the virtues of Native Americans through music and art.  Native American history is often a very disturbing subject from a Native perspective.  As we review the stories of how our forefathers were taken advantage of and victimized, we cannot help but nurse feelings of inward bitterness.  Resentment, however, is a debilitating emotion.  It forces us to cling to situations we cannot change. Native American History is full of Illustrations of heroism and true proactivity.  Native peoples have overcome diverse obstacles such as harsh environments, war, famine, and more recently, battles with assimilation.

My vision as an artist is to remind the world of our heroes.  Whether literal or mythic, Native American history is full of virtues and morals that can equip us for the future.
