Originally opened in 1879, the Lander Pit Mine in Bisbee is one of Arizona's most famous mines. While primarily a Copper mine, some of the finest turquoise in the world was pulled out of the ground in Bisbee, Arizona. The copper content in the ground created turquoise with deep blues and a matrix that ranged from chocolate to "smoky". Artists in particular love to work with Bisbee because it is such a hard stone. The Lander Pit Mine closed in 1974 and Bisbee turquoise has gone on to become one of the most collectible turquoise mines in the world.
