    Annette Nasafotie

Annette Nasafotie like most Hopi weavers of Coiled Basketry would be a member of the Womens Society at Second Mesa where Hopi coiled baskets are an exclusivity. She learned from her mother Rena Talayumptewa and her aunties in the village. The number of Hopi Coil Basket weavers is rapidly diminishing and Annette at age 56 in 2016 happens to be one of the best weavers alive. She makes very tight coils for drum tight baskets. Her designs are crisp and bright. She has a personal “signature” of white over black “ticking” in almost al her baskets.

Annette uses the traditional ways in gathering the yucca which is stripped and kept in wet sand before it is wrapped tightly around bundles of bear grass. The colors are all natural. The green is as picked, the white they get it wet and bleach it in the sun, the red is boiled with Mormon Tea plant, the black from boiled wild sunflower seeds, and the yellow is left to freeze in the snow in winter - hardest color to obtain.

These baskets are made the same way they were a thousand years ago.
